11 Sports Highlights from August You’ll Want to See Again

August saw the commencement of Europe’s top soccer leagues’ seasons, the NFL preseason, and produced many other sports highlights we can’t get enough of. If you missed any of the action, or simply want to relive it, check out our favorite moments below.

It was truly difficult to narrow down our list, but we’ve picked some of the most jaw-dropping sports highlights seen this August. We’ll start by taking a look at some not to be missed moments from Europe’s top soccer leagues.

1. Ligue 1 – Magic Messi and Mbappe

Let’s begin with France’s Ligue 1, where in PSG’s second game of the season against Lille, a sumptuous pass from Lionel Messi almost directly from kick-off fell at the feet of Kylian Mbappe, who calmly slotted the ball home after only 8 seconds! The goal tied the record for fastest ever scored in Ligue 1, and was Messi’s quickest ever assist registered. PSG went on to dominate the rest of the match, with a final score of 7-1. Take a look back at the moment of magic from Mbappe.

2. Bundesliga – Record Breaking Shot Stopping

Over now to Germany, where it was not a goal that caught our attention, but a save. In fact, it was a total of 19 saves from Borussia Munchengladbach’s Swiss Goalkeeper Yann Sommer! In a tightly contested game against reigning champions Bayern Munich, Sommer set the Bundesliga record for most saves in a single match. Munich were held to their first draw of the season, with the game finishing 1-1, and while the hosts did register a goal, a point would certainly not have been possible without the heroics of Sommer, who was awarded the Man of the Match award for his stellar performance.

3. Serie A – Giroud’s Stunning Strike

A player who is no stranger to scoring spectacular goals having won the 2017 Puskas award, given to the best goal scored yearly (a logic defying scorpion kick!), Olivier Giroud has done it once again. In AC Milan’s third game of the season, Giroud’s outstretched boot connected with a cross from Rafael Leao, allowing him to guide a first-touch scissor kick into the back of the opponents net. Giroud adds to his portfolio of goals that will be included in sports highlight reels for years to come.

4. La Liga – Alaba’s Sublime Set Piece:

In Real Madrid’s opening game of the season, the reigning La Liga winners found themselves trailing 1-0 from the 6th minute of the game against newly promoted Almeria. After a 61st minute equalizer from Lucas Vazquez, up stepped David Alaba with a terrific 75th minute free kick that put Madrid 2-1 up, ultimately sealing the win for Los Blancos. What a strike!

5. Premier League – Liverpool Turn the Tide

After a turbulent first three games of the season where no win was registered, Liverpool produced a triumphant performance to silence the critics, recording a 9-0 win over Bournemouth. The scoreline equalled the Premier League record for biggest win. With Liverpool losing one game prior to arch rivals Manchester United, this huge victory is exactly what the fans needed to keep spirits high. Take a look at this particularly impressive goal from Trent Alexander Arnold!

There were simply too many outstanding moments from the game that can’t be missed, so we’ve included the full highlights for you to watch back below!

6. Knockout Blow

In MMA’s ONE Championship, this stunning knockout blow from American fighter Demetrious Johnson during the Flyweight World Title match up caught the eye of fans across social media. The effective knockout blow ended Brazil’s Adriano Moraes hopes at a win, and handed Johnson the walk off KO and the belt. Watch the moment of victory back.

7. Buhai take the Women’s Open:

In a dramatic final contest in the Women’s Open, South African golfer Ashleigh Buhai was able to clinch her first major title, recovering to beat In Gee Chun. While Buhai led by five shots earlier in the final day at Scotland’s Muirfield course, she let the lead slip away from her, allowing Chun to catch up, and leaving the pair tied at the end of hole 18. The competition was ultimately decided through a playoff between Chun and Buhai, which again saw the competitors neck and neck. It took until the fourth hole of the playoff for Buhai to seal her victory, but the scenes of victory were worth the wait!

8. Arise, KaVontae Turpin

During the preseason clash between the Dallas Cowboys and LA Chargers, a player many were previously unfamiliar with made himself known to the world. KaVontae Turpin caught the attention of fans after scoring a 98 yard touchdown from a kick return, delighting social media. However, this wasn’t enough for Turpin, who went on to later score a 72 yard touchdown from a punt return. We’re guessing we’ll see both these plays in sports highlights reels for years to come! Turpin’s performance earned him high praise, and enabled him to secure a spot on the 53 man roster. With the start of the NFL season fast approaching, we’ll be keeping an eye on the special teamer.

9. High School Heroics

More football now, in a different setting. During a high school clash between home team Westerville Central and local rivals Westerville North, the hosts found themselves needing a touchdown with only 5 seconds left on the clock. In a moment of brilliance, Westerville Central’s quick thinking receiver was able to toss the ball to his teammate, who in the midst of the confusion the move had made, powered up the middle to score and clinch the game. Pandemonium!

10. An Unprecedented Trade

Over to the MLB, where although wild trade scenarios happen on a yearly basis, we’ll be remembering this one for a while. Prior to a game between the visiting Boston Red Sox and hosts Houston Astros, catcher Christian Vazquez was traded to the home team, forced to face the media and give his thoughts about having to walk over and join a team who minutes ago were his opposition, but now were his teammates! Have a look at how the awkward situation played out.

11. The Aces Make History

The WNBA playoffs began this August, with records being broken as soon as Game 2 in the clash between the Las Vegas Aces and the Phoenix Mercury. The Aces first half performance saw them score eleven 3 pointers, setting a WNBA record for most scored in a single half. The dominant performance allowed them to run up the score, with the Aces going on to win the game 117-80. Take a look at the record setting moment!

Bonus – Mascot Mayhem

This month’s bonus moment is one we’ve had on repeat. During halftime of an Atlanta Falcons preseason game, a Mascots vs Kids football game was held to provide some entertainment to the crowd. Bloopy, the mascot for baseball’s Atlanta Braves, took the competition as a chance to show off his skills as a running back. Check out the stiff arms!
